Cherry blossom timing gets all the attention, but for a multi-city rail itinerary these two national holiday weeks matter more - here is why, and what to do if your dates overlap.
A Tokyo-Kyoto-Osaka trip runs on the shinkansen, moving between cities every few days on reserved seats. That makes two national holiday weeks a bigger factor for this route than for a single-city stay - not because of weather, but because tens of millions of Japanese travellers are trying to use the same trains and hotels you are.
Golden Week (late April-early May)
A run of four public holidays lands within about a week of each other every year, and most of Japan treats it as one long break. Reserved shinkansen seats on the Tokyo-Kyoto-Osaka corridor sell out well in advance, unreserved cars fill standing-room only, and Kyoto's temples and hotels see some of their highest domestic footfall of the year.
Exact dates shift slightly year to year, so it is worth checking the calendar for your travel year before booking.
Obon (mid-August)
A mid-August holiday built around returning to one's hometown, Obon drives a similar nationwide travel surge - and it lands during the hottest, most humid stretch of the Japanese summer, which makes Kyoto's temple-heavy sightseeing considerably more uncomfortable on top of the crowds and higher fares.
Why this hits a 3-city rail itinerary harder than a single stay
If you are based in one city for a full trip, a busy week mostly means fuller streets. On a route that depends on booking shinkansen seats and changing hotels every few days, the same week means competing with domestic travellers for the exact trains and rooms your itinerary needs - and reserved seats and central hotels are the first things to disappear.
Better windows for this route
Mid-to-late May, right after Golden Week clears, gives warm weather and fresh greenery with noticeably thinner crowds and normal train availability. November is excellent for autumn colour in Kyoto without a national holiday overlapping it. If your dates do land inside Golden Week or Obon, book shinkansen reserved seats and hotels as early as you can - waiting until closer to the trip is the main way this catches people out.
